  • Margins Notice and Gas Deficit Warning

  • The purpose of the Margins Notice and Gas Deficit Warning information provision is to communicate to all parties’ potential or actual risks to the end of day NTS physical system balance. National Grid NTS has three categories of gas balancing information.

    • Margins Notice
    • Gas Deficit Warning Issue
    • Gas Deficit Warning Withdrawal

The notices and warnings replaced the prevailing Gas Balancing Alert (GBA) arrangements in December 2012 following approval of UNC modification 0415.

    • Margins Notice

    • What is a Margins Notice?
A Margins Notice is an information provision to all NTS users that indicates a potential supply / demand imbalance for the coming Gas Day.

When will a Margins Notice be issued?
A Margins Notice will be issued from 13:00 D-1 following an assessment of the Expected Available Supply Level against forecast Total System Demand. If demand is greater than supply (of any value), a Margins Notice will be issued via ANS.

What are Shippers expected to do if a Margins Notice has been issued?
The intent of the Margins Notice is to provide NTS users with a high level, day ahead notice of a potential supply / demand imbalance for the coming gas day, encouraging NTS users to take heed of the rolling Daily Margins Notice Report and reassess their position relative to prevailing forecasts.

Can a Margins Notice be withdrawn?
No, the Margins Notice will remain in place until the end of the Gas Day for which it is applicable, unless superseded by a Gas Deficit Warning.

  • Gas Deficit Warning

  • What is a Gas Deficit Warning (GDW)?
A Gas Deficit Warning is a warning given at the discretion of National Grid based on our expectations of the impact of a significant supply or demand event.

When will a Gas Deficit Warning be issued?
A GDW will be issued in advance of or during a Gas Day should a significant supply or demand event be experienced that instigates a material risk to the physical end of day balance.

What are Shippers expected to do if a Gas Deficit Warning has been issued?
Shippers should seek to balance their portfolio and be prepared to respond accordingly to any balancing action requests from National Grid. In the event of a GDW being issued, the OCM will remain open.

In accordance with UNC, in the event of a GDW being issued, National Grid may consider entering Over The Counter Trades.
For further information, please see the Over The Counter & Multi Day Trades page.

  • Gas Deficit Warning Withdrawal

  • Can a Gas Deficit Warning be withdrawn?
Yes, a Gas Deficit Warning withdrawal notice will be issued at the discretion of National Grid NTS once the circumstances leading to its issue have been resolved and there is no longer an actual or imminent risk to safety of the NTS end of day physical balance.
  • Communication

  • How will I know if a Margins Notice or Gas Deficit Warning has been issued?
All gas balancing information will be issued by National Grid NTS via its website on the Prevailing View page under the 'System Status' header.
In the event of a Gas Deficit Warning being issued or withdrawn, ANS messages will be distributed to all users with an active ANS handset. The message will also be available within the ANS message area of the Prevailing View page.
National Grid also offer a text and email notification service to provide updates on the Gas Deficit Warning. Please provide your details via the link on this page to register for the free subscription service, or login to manage your subscriptions.
