No business exists isolated in society. A large business like National Grid connects in many ways, directly in economic, employment or training terms, and indirectly because we want to encourage our staff to think beyond their day to day roles, to use their imagination and skills to support the communities around them. We do this because we think it brings good ideas and leadership back into the company, but also, critically, because we think it’s the right thing to do.

Step up to Serve

We want to help double the number of young people volunteering and working in social action by 2020 - an extra 1.7 million people involved in practical action for the service of others. That’s the aim of the UK’s Step up to Serve initiative, of which we’re a founding member and lead supporter.

It’s a practical commitment. We’re building volunteering into our training and development programmes, particularly for apprentices and new graduate recruits, as well as including questions about social action in our recruitment policies. The initiative is guiding our volunteering and other community commitments, perfectly complementing educational initiatives like City Year.

The power to serve

The Power to Serve

Power to Serve is our US volunteering programme. It’s designed to help employees work individually or collectively in community initiatives and activities, ranging from STEM work in schools or colleges through to storm preparedness. Colleagues can join one of our nine Regional Volunteer Councils, working to help coordinate and communicate volunteer events across our US service area, or contact our US Corporate Citizenship department to develop their own ideas and events.
